Fructose Transformation into 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural over Natural Transcarpathian Zeolites

Based on Transcarpathian zeolite the catalysts in calcium-lanthanum-ammonium form were synthesized and modified by steaming dealumination with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. The samples characterized using nitrogen adsorption/desorption, XRD, XRF, FTIR-spectroscopy. yield of 5 hydroxymethylfurfural over at 433 K was found to be 50 83% a practically full conversion fructose.

The conversion of D-fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) on a 1 mmol scale was achieved in good yield (68%) using NH(4)Cl as catalyst in isopropanol at 120°C. About 3% of 5-i-propoxymethylfurfural was formed. The reaction in ethanol at 100°C on a 10g scale gave a total yield of HMF and 5-ethoxymethylfurfural of 42%. No mineral acid such as H(2)SO(4) and HCl are required.

Ionic liquids (ILs) with different cations and anions were used to study the effects on 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) preparation. It was found that both aggregations of cations and hydrogen bonds of anions with fructose played important roles.
